(ContentDesk) November 30, 2005 -- With the holidays fast approaching, people bring out all the old holiday decorations and purchase new ones.
Some of those new decorations will be candles.
Christmas without candles is like an ice cream cone without the ice cream.
The National Fire Protection Association (http://www.mfpa.org) report candles are the 4th leading cause of house fires.
With this in mind, it is important to review basic candle safety. When purchasing candles, make sure they are good quality candles that will burn evenly.
Candles that burn evenly will maintain an even flame, and hot wax will pool into the candle, not run onto items around the candle.
Uneven burning candles can spill wax or cause the wick to shift. When placing candles in decorations, set the candles in
fire retardant holders designed for candles. When placing candles in wreaths or other natural decorations, make sure the candle flame is significantly higher than the decorations. Carefully check to ensure the candle is stable in the decorations.
Extinguish the candle when it burns down to 2" to 3" above the decorations.Always remove all decorations and paper from the candles before burning.
Any raffia, wrapping paper, or tags on the candles can catch fire. The general care and maintenance of candles is important for preventing any type of accidental fire also.
These include: keep wick trimmed to 1/4", keep wax pool free of debris, do not move a lit candle, wait until the wax pool has cooled before moving the candle, and extinguish pillar candles if the wax pool come too close to the edge of the candle.Probably the most important candle safety tip is never leave lit candles unattended.
No matter how careful you may be in decorating with candles, accidents can happen.

Don?t You Love Highly Scented Candles?
The majority of highly scented candles use fragrance oils, which means the intention is to scent the air of a room. However, you can also have highly scented candles that use essential oils. This type of candle has many therapeutic uses as aromatherapy candles. If you research the various aromatherapy scents, you will find one that will have the healing properties you need, whether you just need to relax, cure an illness or help soothe your spirit. Highly scented candles are widely available, but if there is a specific scent that you want you can have your candles custom made.
Although beeswax candles are supposed to be the best candles, soy candles come in a close second. In addition, beeswax candles are rarely scented whereas highly scented soy candles will hold the scent until the candle is completely burned out. Like beeswax candles, these highly scented candles are cleaner when burning and do not give off black soot as do paraffin candles. Soy candles are...
What do you really know about your candle purchase?
Recently, I had the opportunity to attend a popular gift show in my local area. My purpose in attending this gift show was to scope out my competition and the quality of their soy candles compared to what I offer. I was truly surprised with the results of how many candle exhibitors were present and was more so surprised with the results of how well they didn't know their product. Now my results are in no way to badger the company in anyway, but to open the eyes of our consumers, the results are:Candle Exhibitor #1:This exhibitor stated that they're soy candles were handmade. I was told that their soy candles burned great had no soot or mushroom build up and had an awesome scent throw. Well, fortunately the exhibitor had several candles burning and I notice on their candles that the wick that was chosen had a lot of mushrooming and a little bit of soot build up and no scent throw unless your nose was directly above the flame.
Speaking of flame, the flame on these candles was high...

Scented Candles
Traditionally, candles were used as a source of light. In modern times, due to availability of abundant electricity, candles are no longer in great demand. Candles are now used for their aesthetic value. Scented candles create a striking visual effect and they gives off a pleasant aroma when lit. They also help to create a comfortable and cozy ambiance.
Many candles are made from a selection of special wax blends that consume a predetermined amount of fragrant oils.
The candles do not absorb extra oil. Some candles are designed to retain added oil and in turn emit stronger aromas when burned. A few candle manufacturers are attempting to produce super-scented candles.
In modern times, scented candles are often used in aromatherapy. A number of scented candles turn to oil as they burn, so it is advisable to burn them in glass containers or special holders.
The most modern variety of scented candle burns as a liquid, without dripping wax or releasing...
